Open X $5.95 Tester Grade: A-
In just a couple days...you'll probably be gathered around your Christmas tree opening presents. But what do you do when a present just won't open? We're talking about those tough plastic-encased products you have to struggle to get into. Well, OpenX says it could be the best gift you could give yourself. The product's commercial asks the questions: "Are you tired of trying to open impossible plastic packages? Have you ever destroyed the product warranty card trying to get it open or pinched or cut yourself on the plastic?" And, it shows someone biting the plastic to get it open. Rune Williams of East Greenbush admits that he's resorted to that before and he showed up a shredded up plastic package he'd recently been fighting with. This dad says it's even more frustrating when the struggle happens on what's supposed to be a happy day. "My son just had a birthday actually and some of the gifts he got, instead of just enjoying them right away we had to wait til we got home to get whatever to open it," says Williams. He says the same thing will probably happen on Christmas...with toys like this around....so we gave him OpenX. The package promises that you can open things with ease. But Rune couldn't open OpenX with ease. He tried using his teeth — then, a knife — to get the thin plastic film off. He kept an open mind though. We put some stuff under the Willliams tree to see if the product's design really makes opening as easy as pushing and sliding. Rune got a little caught on the cardboard in the first package at first. But then, it sliced right open. It worked on toy packaging too — big and small. "This rips through pretty easily," Williams said. But OpenX promises to work on other stuff too. So we had him try the plastic film around VHS tapes. It worked. Rune said this six dollar gadget could cut down on time spent fighting with plastic packaging. "If I had this product right with me...it'd be something like okay, we can open it real quick," he told us. He said he'd recommend it to anybody — and will be sure to keep it on hand for himself — and his son — this Christmas.
